Before and during an outage
- Report it. Do not assume a neighbor has called. Give your address and, if you can, the account number from your bill.
- Check the map (Huntsville Utilities customers) to see whether your outage is already on it.
- Stay away from downed lines. Treat every downed line as live and call 911.
- Generators: run portable generators outside, away from windows and doors, and never connect one to your home’s wiring without a proper transfer switch, which can send power back down the line to crews.
- Food: keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible.
