North Day Hill Road at SR-53 in Harvest stays closed to about mid-November; I-565 widening in Madison brings night lane closures into 2027.
Last checked Oct. 31, 2026. This page is refreshed weekly. Sources: the Alabama Department of Transportation’s I-565 widening project page and Aug. 11 update and Oct. 23 notice on North Day Hill Road, ALGO Traffic, and the City of Madison Capital Improvements Program, resurfacing plan and Traffic Issues pages.
The biggest job on Madison’s roads is the Alabama Department of Transportation’s widening of Interstate 565 to six lanes through the city, about five miles from west of the County Line Road interchange (Exit 7) to east of Wall Triana Highway (Exit 9). Expect nighttime lane closures there into 2027. For live closures, crashes and cameras on state roads, use ALGO Traffic, ALDOT’s traveler information site and app.
North of the city, North Day Hill Road is closed at SR-53 in Harvest. It closed at 6 a.m. Oct. 26 for about three weeks, so expect it to reopen around mid-November. The detour is below.

State projects (ALDOT)
I-565 widening, County Line Road to Wall Triana Highway. The $29 million project (contract cost $28,992,350.52) adds a third lane in each direction, mostly in the grassy median, and widens two sets of bridges: at Bradford Creek just west of Exit 9 and at Intergraph Way and the Norfolk Southern railroad just east of Exit 9. The contractor is Wiregrass Construction. Work began in September 2024; ALDOT’s project page lists a projected completion of summer 2027. ALDOT says nearly 70,000 vehicles a day use I-565 through Madison.
- Where it stands: in an Aug. 11 update, ALDOT said the inside widening from Exit 7 to Bradford Creek was substantially complete and the barriers were moving to the areas still to widen: the outside shoulder near Exit 7 and the median near Exit 9. The eastbound lane shift moved from the right to the left.
- Bridges: girders for the last spans at Bradford Creek went up in early August. ALDOT expected work on the Intergraph Way and railroad bridges to resume this fall. As of Oct. 31, ALDOT had posted no update since Aug. 11, so we could not confirm that the bridge work has restarted or when the next traffic shift comes. ALGO Traffic listed no I-565 lane closure in Madison on Oct. 31; closures are posted night by night, so check before you drive.
- What drivers see: concrete barriers along the median and shoulder, narrower lanes, and single-lane closures at night, about 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. ALDOT said in 2024 that it does not usually permit daytime closures on this job.
North Day Hill Road closed at SR-53, Harvest. ALDOT closed North Day Hill Road at its intersection with SR-53 (Alabama 53) at 6 a.m. Oct. 26 for about three weeks, weather permitting. Crews are lowering the road’s grade and rebuilding the intersection for ALDOT’s $5.3 million SR-53 widening. The contractor is Rogers Group.
- Detour: Robins Road, Stoney Point Drive and Sunshine Drive, in either direction, with signs posted.
- Also on SR-53: ALGO Traffic lists daytime lane closures, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., on SR-53 in both directions between Jeff Road and Robins Road in Harvest, listed through May 31, 2027.
- Questions: the ALDOT News Hub, 334-353-6554, or ALGO Traffic.
When the I-565 job is done, I-565 will have at least six lanes from I-65 to Memorial Parkway in Huntsville. A separate project finished in late 2021 widened I-565 in Limestone County, from west of I-65 to west of County Line Road.
City projects
The City of Madison Engineering Department keeps an interactive Capital Improvements Project map. The city’s 2024 Transportation Plan for gas tax funds sets aside money to replace and widen the Sullivan Street bridge north of Mill Road, the Streets page says.
Neighborhood resurfacing, fiscal 2027
The city rates every street with the PASER system and coordinates paving with Madison Utilities so new asphalt is not cut up for pipe work. Fiscal 2027 began Oct. 1, 2026. The five-year plan lists these streets for this year, about 37,227 linear feet in all:
| Council district | Streets |
|---|---|
| 3 | College Street, Arnett Street (east of Wall Triana), Westscott Drive (west) |
| 5 | Ashley Way, Spring Water Drive, Southwood Drive, Heatherwood Drive, Nale Drive, Forest Pointe Drive, Rainbow Drive |
| 6 | Terri Drive, Willena Drive, Water Oak Drive, Pin Oak Drive, Norris Lane, Wingfield Drive, Stavemill Circle, Highpoint Street, Callaway Drive, Bellingrath Drive, Shadow Ridge Drive |
| 7 | Markum Lane, Mickelo Lane, Claytor Lane |
The plan does not give paving dates. Expect “no parking” signs and short daytime closures on a street in the days it is milled and paved.
Who handles what
The city’s Traffic Issues page splits the work:
- Engineering plans the major street network, runs traffic studies and recommends signal timing. Any change to signs or signals at an intersection needs a study; request one at 256-772-2565.
- Public Works maintains every signal and sign and fixes sight visibility problems.
- Madison Police enforces traffic laws, works crashes, directs traffic when a signal fails or an event closes a street, and runs the traffic calming program for speed humps.
Utility work by Madison Utilities can close lanes on city streets, and the city posts road alerts through its news flash and Notify Me lists.
