Public schools in Madison are run by Madison City Schools, a city school system separate from the Madison County and Limestone County systems. It runs 13 schools with attendance zones: two high schools, three middle schools and eight elementary schools, the newest of them Russell Branch Elementary, which opened for 2026-27. Alabama graded the district an A, with 95 points, on its 2024-25 state report card, with 12,737 students.

Attendance zones do not follow city limits, ZIP codes or neighborhood names, and the district redrew them for 2026-27 after a public hearing Oct. 27, 2025 (notice, PDF); the rezoning map was an action item at the board’s Nov. 6, 2025, meeting (agenda, PDF). Not every home with a Madison address is in the city school system: the district’s School Zones page points families to the Madison County and Limestone County tax records to confirm their school district. Check the exact address on the district’s School Locator.
