Trick-or-treating safely
Halloween is a Saturday this year, so expect more children out, and earlier, than on a school night. The basics:
- Light and see: sunset is 5:56 p.m. Carry a flashlight, and add reflective tape to costumes and bags.
- Walk on sidewalks and cross at corners. Where there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
- Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods from late afternoon, and watch for children darting between parked cars.
- Check the candy at home before children eat it, and throw out anything unwrapped.
- Porch lights: a lit porch is the usual sign that a house is handing out candy.
- Pets: keep dogs inside, away from a door that opens all evening.
The day after
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1; clocks go back an hour. Madison’s garbage pickup stays on Thursday that week.
